January 2008 Federal Trade Commission issues consumer Alert"The Keys to Hiring a Reputable Locksmith"
Things you should know before you hire a Locksmith
1. Is the company Licensed?
Colorado does not currently have locksmith licensing requirements; however it is a good idea to ask anyways, if the company says they are licensed with the State of Colorado, they are lying. Did you know that a convicted rapist or murderer can be a locksmith in Colorado and there is no law against it. Do you want a convicted rapist having keys to your car, home or business?
**NOTE - DID YOU KNOW : Members of the ROCKY MOUNTAIN LOCKSMITH ASSOCIATION and ASSOCIATED LOCKSMITHS OF AMERICA are screened by a government agency for past criminal background, before they are allowed to become a member!!
2. Is the company local to your area?
There are many companies that advertise on the internet and are dispatched from a large city such as New York or Chicago. These companies are becoming known for their scandalous business practices of misquoting customers and charging outrageous prices for their services.
Make sure the company you choose to do work with has a physical shop you can visit or is a mobile company that can be recommended by someone you trust. Some companies may appear to be local and are routinely misquoting prices, wait times and scamming customers out of hundreds of dollars. To protect yourself and reduce risk, be very skeptical of any 1-800 numbers you call for locksmith services. Also be sure and verify that the address listed is real, many are often, bogus addresses.

3. Is the company bonded?
Bonding is not mandatory in Colorado, however, a serious locksmith company will have bonding insurance to protect you and their company. Normal bonding insurance will cover you for about $15,000 if a employee of the company steals something from your home.
4. Does the company have Insurance?
Insurance is not mandatory for locksmith businesses in Colorado. But if the company is going to do work in your home or business they should have at the minimum Business Liability insurance. And if they have employees they are required to have Worker Compensation insurance. Self employed "Sole proprietors" are not required to carry worker comp insurance.
5. What is the companies warranty policy?
Some companies may not even offer you a warranty. Some may give you 30 days, some a year. It is in the customers best interest to find out what is warranted and for how long.
